A loop impedance test verifies there will be enough current to blow a fuse or circuit breaker when electrical faults strike. Here’s why that’s important…
Annual earth fault loop impedance testing is recommended for all workplaces, including commercial premises, offices, schools, hotels and motels, retirement villages, workshops, factories and many other buildings and places of employment.
An earth fault loop impedance test verifies that, when an electrical fault occurs, there will be enough current to operate the fuse or circuit breaker that is protecting the faulty circuit. If a “fault current” is left undetected, circuits often overheat and even catch fire.

Earth fault loop impedance
Earth fault loop impedance is the path followed by fault current when a low impedance fault occurs between the phase conductor and earth, i.e. “earth fault loop“.
Earth fault loop impedance test
An earth fault loop impedance test is conducted to make sure that when this fault occurs in an electrical circuit, the fault current will be strong enough to set off the circuit protection (i.e. blow the fuse or trigger the circuit breaker).
Undetected fault current often leads to circuits overheating and catching fire!
The objective of loop impedance testing is therefore to make sure the circuit is disconnected fast enough to prevent overheating and fire.
The test is commonly referred to by one of the following 4 descriptions…
- “earth fault loop impedance test”
- “earth loop impedance test”
- “loop impedance test”
- or simply “loop test”
Earth fault loop impedance testing is the only way to ensure that when a fault occurs the electricity can safely return to the earth, thereby triggering the circuit breaker and helping to avoid dangerous overheating and fire.
To make sure your workplace is safe, book a loop impedance test now!

Our specialised testing checks the impedance of the earth and confirms that the resistance on the earth line is within the correct tolerance to allow the circuit breakers to operate correctly. We also check the following…
- We check the Earth Loop in several places to ensure the complete workplace is covered.
- We check the Ground Rod is earthing correctly with the soil.
- We check the earth connection to the Ground Rod does not have high resistance due to corrosion.
- We check the Neutral to Earth Link is functioning correctly.
- We check that labels and tags are secured in the appropriate places.
Upon the conclusion of our checking, you will receive an electronic copy for your records.
